Pet Microchipping Florida What is a microchip? A microchip is a tiny device that can be inserted between the pet's shoulder blades using a syringe. It contains an identification number that will be registered to you, the owner. This feature will provide you with irrefutable proof that your pet belongs to you. If ever someone were to try to claim ownership of your pet, a microchip will be a crucial factor in having them returned to you.

How does the microchip work? Through the use of a scanner, the chip which is coded with an identifying number will be matched up to a national database. The database will include your contact information. The service provider will contact you and let you know where your loved one has been found. The microchip does not act as a GPS device, but rather will be traceable anywhere that a microchip scanner is used – the humane society, animal control, shelters, veterinary clinics, and some pet stores.

Remember! It is important to keep your microchip registration information as current as possible at all times. If you should move, change your name, or update your phone numbers it is important to update the microchip company so that your pet's registration information is kept as up to date as possible.

There are numerous reasons why your pet's veterinarian might feel that lab work is warranted. Blood testing is vital in both diagnosing medical conditions, and preventing such conditions from advancing. Annual testing for heartworm and intestinal parasites ensure that you treat any potential infections at the first on-set, rather than when they have advanced to the point of further complications.

Pre-surgical blood work is done when a pet is admitted for anesthetic procedures, and is done by our in-house laboratory. Our caring surgical staff will obtain a sample before your pet is anesthetized and the surgeon will review the results before your pet's procedure is done, to ensure that your pet is at the optimum level of safety while under sedation. Senior wellness blood screenings and a wide variety of diagnostic panels are also offered. These panels allow us to check such crucial aspects as a pet's thyroid level, kidney and liver values, and blood count. Our veterinarians will always thoroughly explain the recommended testing for your pet at the time of your appointment.

To schedule a consultation with one of our doctors or discuss what diagnostics would be best for your pet please contact DPC Veterinary Hospital today! Our Fort Lauderdale office is eager to meet both you and your furry family!

A common misconception is that indoor pets do not need to be treated for fleas, ticks and heartworm. It is absolutely crucial that every pet is on heartworm prevention. In Florida we have mosquitoes year-round. One mosquito bite is all it takes for your pet to be at risk of contracting heartworm. In addition to taking a monthly heartworm preventative, your pet should also be tested for heartworm disease annually by an experienced Florida veterinarian. This test is usually part of a yearly vaccination and wellness package.

As with heartworm prevention, flea and tick prevention is also recommended on a monthly basis. We offer these products in both oral and topical form, and our veterinary staff is happy to discuss what combination of products best suits your pet's unique needs.

In the past, pets who tested positive for heartworm were able to undergo treatment which included the administration of an injectable medication, Immiticide, that proved effective in combating the disease. Unfortunately, at this time the injectable medication is on indefinite back order. Giving heartworm prevention diligently is more important now than ever. DPC is a Davie Florida Vet that stocks Tri-Heart, Interceptor, Advantage Multi, and Trifexis. To discuss which product best suits your pet, please consult your veterinarian at the time of your appointment. An annual heartworm test and physical examination is required for all pets while on heartworm prevention.

Fleas and ticks are both a nuisance for owners and a health risk for pets. Tick infestation can pose a variety of health risks such as lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. The complications of these diseases progress over time and can prove fatal. It is highly recommended that all pets, both indoor and outdoor, receive a treatment on a monthly basis. The products we offer for flea and tick control are Advantage Multi, Advantix, Comfortis and Trifexis. If you are unsure as to which product is best for you and your pet, please consult one of our caring and highly experienced veterinary staff members.

DPC stocks all of the mentioaned prevention products in our office as well as in our online pharmacy for our client's convenience. Stop in to our Davie, Florida location or visit our online store to purchase some prevention today! Don't forget to ask about any special promotions.

Among the most important veterinary diagnostic services are radiology and laboratory testing. X-rays are extremely useful in diagnosing medical problems in your pet, including tumors, foreign bodies, heart and lung disease, gastrointestinal illnesses, fractures and joint problems. Our on-site, digital x-ray equipment provides high-quality radiographs instantly to aid in the quick diagnosis and treatment of your pet.

DPC Hollywood Florida Veterinary Clinic is also equipped with a state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory that allows us to measure dozens of values, with results often available in a few minutes. In conjunction with our in-house laboratory, we offer a variety of external laboratory services via a trusted and well-established company for more intense diagnostics, should the need arise. Results are transmitted to us on a rotating basis and our doctors will report to you with the findings as soon as they are transmitted to us electronically. The results are then conveniently updated directly into your pet's paperless, electronic file by our laboratory database.

Heartworm tests, complete blood counts, blood-chemistry panels, urinalysis and fecal examinations are some of the many laboratory tests that we perform in the hospital. Our laboratory equipment means that your pet's results are quickly available and then permanently stored in your pet's file – resulting in fast, comprehensive treatment for your pet and lasting and uncompromised records.
